Balancing the nervous system

Stress is a word we hear so much in today’s society. The pace of life is so fast, we struggle to stop.

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is in charge of all bodily functions that we don’t have to think about, such as heart rate and blood pressure regulation, digestion, bladder control, respiration, sweating and our stress response. There are two branches, with the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) being our fight flight response, and the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) for rest, digest and restore.

Hypermobility from a Mindbody perspective

The term joint hypermobility (also known as being “double-jointed”) describes the ability to move a joint through a wider range of movement than “normal”. Associated symptoms may include joint and muscle pain, joint dislocations, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction, fast heart rate, low blood pressure, dizziness, fainting, irritable bowel, gastroparesis (where they food moves slowly though the gut), pelvic pain, headaches, interstitial cystitis, fatigue, prone to allergies, anxiety and other mental health issues. It is interesting to note, these symptoms are common in PPD/TMS.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome and my cat

For many years I have had symptoms of Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). This is a condition causing episodes of abdominal cramping, bloating, diarrhoea and constipation. There is no known cause, and no structural abnormality of the bowel is found on investigations. I also have Postural Tachycardia Syndrome (PoTS) of which IBS is a commonly associated symptom. As a Pilates teacher and nurse I wanted to learn more about breathing to help my patients and clients, so I embarked on a fascinating journey to find out more. Being a keen skier, biker, climber, hill walker, anything else that involves outdoor activities and mountains, I was also keen to discover if breathing well could help improve my performance in the activities I do.
